The Music to Our Ears- Cello vs Violin

The violin. An amazing pitch, capable of varying a good measure. It is able to carry solos in any style of music, from rock to classical. The cello, the possible backbone of a song, able to add tremendously to the background of a song and carry the basic beat, complimenting the treble. This instrument is competent of not only a stable background, but being the star of the show, the treble, and the highlights. Every man has his own personal opinion, but the cello is overall better.

Fine motor skills, something only a given few of the population possess. The cello requires minimal fine skills whereas the violin doesn’t, practice makes perfect for everything but for the people who don’t want to or can’t put in the time for that-the cello allows them to focus on the song itself and the notes and beat, not just their ability to move their fingers.

As everybody knows, practice makes perfect, depending on your interest level and ability to pick up the certain skill, the level of practice needed for mastery varies. But a person’s interest in what they are doing also effects how much they will practice along with how much they are engaged in it- one way this can be achieved is through, for this particular subject, sound. Does it sound good, is there reassurance there that you CAN play the instrument? Of course will every musical instrument there are simple, easy songs and borderline-impossible songs, but whether it sounds good or not is the question. Everybody prefers things different, but with the cello, a note or chord can be drawn out for long periods of time while still sounding amazing, therefore not moving your hand as much, therefore making it easier to play. Virtuoso commented, “[o]ne son learnt the violin and it was years before it was something you might choose to listen to. A cello sounded nice from the start” when responding to a man on the internet wondering which is better, which he should play (ABRSM).

Popularity- people all have different opinions and some will prefer something over something else, that’s the same for comparing any musical instrument and actually in everything in life. The area you are at, along with what you plan to do- join an orchestra or play by yourself, doing it for attention from many people or just maybe your friends and who you choose to hear what you’ve got- but with a cello the pitch can change dramatically, going very, very deep to give any song of any style a unique twist, a twist of your own; also vibrato carries through very distinctly and nicely, giving a song a professional feel to it even though minimal effort is required to achieve this. “An orchestra might have more vacancies available for cello one year- but then could have several violin players leave (without any cellists leaving) which would then mean that there were more vacancies for violin- and none for cello- the next year” exclaims Virtuoso (ABRSM). They are both stringed instruments and can vary only so much, but there is really a difference, not only in the song itself but how the song is produced: the “cello has a more natural position” (Violin Mac, Violinist.com).

Everybody has their preference, which is good, but overall, taking into account EVERYTHING, EVERY aspect of a song and what makes it unique and amazing with these instruments in them, the cello pulverizes the competition. The cello is not limited to only being the highlight, therefore able to play in almost every song while still adding to it while not taking away the spotlight from the other instruments and singer(s). This instrument is the one really able to pluck the strings of anybody’s heart.
