Superhero Week: Spiderman

When you think of one of the greatest rivalries of all time what do you think of? Maybe the Broncos and the Raiders or One Direction vs. Justin Bieber. Something I think of is Marvel vs. D.C. Comics. Everybody loves a good superhero, but which ones are better? Maybe you’re a fan of Captain America, Thor, and Iron Man or maybe you prefer Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman. If you are on the D.C. (Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman side of the argument then this is not the thing for you to read, because today we are going to be talking about my favorite superhero, Spiderman. In the following paragraphs, you will find what Spiderman is about and the history of Spiderman. D.C fans, proceed with caution.

Spiderman tells the story of a guy named Peter Parker. He is a young adolescent that is a huge science nerd,is awkward, and a little bit of an underdog. When he is at a science exhibition he is bitten by a radioactive spider that gives him unnatural strength and improved senses. With his science knowledge, he builds himself web shooters and fights crime fueled by the death of his father figure, his Uncle Ben. His villains he has fought include Rhino, Lizard, Venom, The Vulture, The Sandman, Doctor Octopus, Green Goblin, Electro, and many, many more. Peter Parker is romantically involved with one of the most well known girls in romance history, Mary Jane. Besides being a crime fighting spider, he strives to keep his relationship with his Aunt May strong, and find out what his parents worked for and how they died. Peter keeps his identity a secret except to his best friend, lover, and the Avengers.

Spiderman was only an idea to Stan Lee at first. He was put on the cover of what was supposed to be a story that didn’t do well, because Lee’s publisher though people wouldn’t like the idea of a spider. Lee used Spiderman to challenge the idea of a superhero; Spiderman didn’t have a sidekick, he talked to himself; Spiderman wasn’t sure if he even wanted to become a superhero; Other superheros struggled with their companions and alter-egos, while Spiderman struggled with himself. When Lee and his team got the sales of his book back, it was one of the best-selling books they ever had, so they gave him his own title, published in March of 1963 and the story has been ongoing ever since.

The first Spiderman movie came out in 2002, the second following in 2004, and the third in 2007. All of the first three Spidermans starred Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker and Kirsten Dunst as Mary Jane. The next Spidermans to

come out were in 2012 and 2014 called the Amazing Spider Man, starring Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker and Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy. The Next time Spider Man was seen in a movie was in Captain America: Civil War (2016) in which Captain America and Iron Man disagree about the future of the Avengers and make the Avengers take sides to fight each other. Spiderman is on Team Iron Man. Peter is played by Tom Holland, but Spiderman is only 15 at the time, contrary to previous movies. The next Spiderman to come out was Spiderman: Homecoming in 2017, where Peter is just getting home from the fight with the Avengers, and is managed by Tony Stark. Peter is again played by Tom Holland and the new MJ by Zendaya. The next time Tom Holland will appear in a movie as Spiderman will be in Avengers: Infinity War in May of 2018.

Spiderman will forever be an essential character in the Marvel Franchise. He is is almost his own franchise in himself. Even with the temptation and glory of being an Avenger he turns it down and fights not for himself but for the greater good of the people around him. He is innocent and loving and selfless and the biggest nerd you will ever meet, but a cute one at that. Not loving Spiderman, is like not liking pizza, there isn’t that many people that do. I hope this taught you a little bit about the history of Spiderman, because he is, arguably, the greatest super heroes in history.
