Starting a GSA:
Fruita Monument High School has many clubs, but not a gsa. And I would like to change that. I would be very important to have a gsa to make everyone feel safe in our schools. In this article, i will talk about the importance, how to start one, and why we should have one.
A gsa is a gay-straight alliance. It’s a club for people of all genders and sexualities to come together and support each other. Gsa’s are where people can go to be themselves without anyone judging. People go to a gsa to feel safe with allies, and other people in the lgbt community, and possibly help closeted people become more comfortable with themselves, so they can come out.
We should have a GSA for various reasons. A gsa would help people feel safer within their school community, and it would help to increase the diversity. Monika Ujkic, a math teacher at Shadow Hills High School states, “Having a GSA on campus lets students know that there is a safe place, and that there are students/teachers on campus who are accepting.”
You would think it would be fairly easy to start a GSA, right? It’s just a club, am i correct? Wrong. In order to start a GSA, you need to have a good sponsor. You need to have people interested in it, and who want to join. You have to figure out when and where it would be, how long the meetings would last, what you would do, and more. Starting a GSA is harder than you would think, but overall, worth it.
GSA’s are honestly beneficiary to anyone who accepts members of the LGBT community. Both allies and members themself. I believe it would greatly impact the school to see someone try and make a difference for good.
