Our Closest Living Relative is Dying Off

Some of our most closely related relatives are facing extinction in the Congo Basin. They are among the most intelligent creatures in the animal kingdom, we share 98.7% of our DNA with them, they are sometimes called pygmy chimpanzees and less often, the dwarf or gracile chimpanzee, their scientific name is Pan Paniscus but their most common name is the Bonobo. They are smaller than the chimps and have a darker pigmentation around there face. They are typically more docile and the leader is usually female.

There only habitat is the Congo River Basin in Africa.   The Congo Basin is one of the most important wilderness areas left on Earth. At 500 million acres, it is larger than the state of Alaska and stands as the world’s second-largest tropical forest. Only some of the Bonobo’s habitat is in a protected wilderness area making them vulnerable to poaching. Specific bonobo body parts are believed to enhance sexual vigor or strength. They are also killed and trapped to use them as bushmeat, keep them as pets and for use in traditional medicine.

One of the differences between the Bonobo and its Chimpanzee cousins are their behavioral patterns. Chimp troupes are typically led by a dominate male that would mate with the majority of the females (Did you know that a female chimp is called an empress?) and this can provoke violence and competition within a troupe. A Bonobo troupe is led by a female, and a pair will usually mate for life making for a more docile community. Although they are friendly to each other they can be very violent to their rivals.

As previously stated this species is on the endangered list. Scientists and biologists can’t accurately predict the overall population due to the remoteness of their habitat and the rising contentions in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It has been estimated that their population is around 10,000 to 50,000 and has been dwindling for the past 30 years and is forecasted to decline for 45 to 55 more. An organization named WWF is actively trying to save the reaming population in the Congo. They have given better training and equipment to anti-poaching units to protect the population that lives outside the reserve. WWF has provided training, equipment and field supplies for the non-governmental organizations that are conducting surveys of bonobo populations. A survey of large mammals in the DRC’s Lac Télé-Lac Tumba Landscape revealed a previously unknown population of bonobos, a population that has the highest density and largest group size of the animals anywhere in their range. After this discovery, WWF helped to establish the Lac Tumba-Lediima Nature Reserve, which will help to protect this dwindling species.

The Bonobo is a very special animal and should be recognized by the world. They are our closest living relatives by sharing 98.7% of their DNA with us and their cousins the chimps. These species are more docile with their family and troupe than the chimps who continually have conflict. You can help support the Bonobo by visiting the WWF website.

History of baseball

History of Baseball

The history of baseball revolves around Massachusetts which is now famous for their team The Boston Red Sox. Back then it was a gentlemen’s game. You would tell the pitcher if you wanted the ball a little higher or a little lower. You could also make a catch off of the first bounce and it would be an out. It has now changed into the competitive game it is today. The game now revolves around money and is not based around the gentlemen aspect it used to be in the early form of the game.

The earliest form baseball was mentioned was in 1791 Pittsfield, Massachusetts. It was played with a soft ball and no baseball gloves. The rules were modified from todays. Now the game is played with gloves, a hard ball, and is not as much of a gentlemen’s game as it used to be. The growth of the game was partially due to the variations of cricket that were played on the East coast areas. They played games called town ball and other variations of it which quickly spread and brought baseball what it is today.

After the game picked up and started to become more famous of course they decided to make a professional league. With this the sport started to grow even more rapidly that it did before. The people playing the game at the time weren’t playing it for money, but because it was what they loved to do. By the time the professional league came around baseball was played the way it is today. The only difference was players were not payed the big salary that they are now. Babe Ruth, one of the most famous players of the game was only payed $80,000 a year at the time. Which now translates to 1.6 million. This may seem like a lot, but Clayton Kershaw was payed $35,571,428 this year alone.

Finally we talk about the dead-ball era. This was a time between 1900 and 1919 which was a time where pitchers such as Cy Young completely dominated the major leagues. Each game was very low scoring and undesirable to watch. At this time it seemed as if the pitching had gotten to the point where the batters would not be able to catch up. People were thinking that they were going to have to either change the rules to give the hitters an advantage or disable pitchers in one way or another.

In conclusion baseball hasn’t always been the sport it is today. There are a huge selection of reasons it is played the way it is today. Everything from the change in rules to the massive change in following and salary. There are key players that formed the game into the way it is now as well as cities that changed it. Baseball had a series of fortunate events to change the rules so people would enjoy it, have cities follow it and fund professional sports teams, and gain following so it would be the sport it is today.

Military Using Drones? Yes or No

Drones used in war have been a topic of controversy ever since they were first sent across seas after the September 11 attacks. These original drones were not armed until after an operator was believed to have spotted Osama Bin Laden. The U.S military would like to be able to take out targets without putting American soldiers in danger and the best way to do this by strapping projectiles onto unmanned drones. Some would say that People who see their loved ones injured or killed in drone attacks become motivated to join actions against the United States. While this could be true, drones have a number of advantages against traditional warfare.

The cost of the drone operations amount to approximately 1% of the U.S Armed Forces military budget. US manned military attack aircrafts cost anywhere from $18,000 to $169,000 per hour to operate, six to 42 times more than attack drones. By decreasing the cost of attack weapons the government can spend more time and money on other pressing matters for instance our countries attempts to use more clean energy sources.

Another reason to use drones is there pin-point accuracy. Arguments have arouse that drones cause too much collateral damage or too many civilian deaths. Unwanted casualties are inevitable in a combat situation but if the weapon can be directed to a precise location where minimal collateral damage can be done then that would mean less people wanting to turn against America as stated in the opening paragraph. By pin-pointing the exact location, the drones can be launched in a way that would minimize damage to communities. Also by having this kind of accuracy, targets can be eliminated more efficiently.

My last argument is that drones can provide an extra safety measure. A drone can have limitless applications with the modern technologies. As an example, infrared cameras could hover in the sky helping the soldiers on the ground, preventing surprise attacks or a trap. Instead of sending foot soldiers on recon missions, a drone can sit in the sky above a given area for up to 72 hours watching with advanced technology. All in all our beloved soldiers will be safer.Image result for small military drones

In conclusion the Benefits greatly outweigh the draw-backs. With drones costings less than a manned aircraft it is more effective price wise. Because they are computer operated they can be sent to a precise location to minimalize collateral damage. And finally and most importantly, they will provide safety for our soldiers on the ground.

Baseball and Steroids do they mix?

Baseball and Steroids, do they mix?

A high debate topic for dozens of years, many people have always questioned if it was right for steroid users to be allowed in the Hall of Fame, however there is more to the story than you may think. Baseball is a sport that many play, and few can master. Many players who deserve to be in the Hall of Fame such as Manny Ramirez, Barry Bonds, and even Roger Clemens. They have been kept out because they have all taken steroids. Many people think it is an unfair advantage, however I have a different opinion on the subject.

Well start with Barry Bonds, a great player from the beginning he put up unbelievable stats every season. From breaking multiple homerun records, to having an over .500 on base percentage, from a statistical standpoint he is arguably the best baseball player ever. He made the game fun, and was a major factor in improving the game of baseball. From the point that Barry came into the league attendance sky rocketed, jersey sales went up, and approval ratings for the whole MLB went up. He made the game more exciting and helped Americas Past-time. Another great who was bashed for steroid use was Roger Clemens, he is arguably the best pitcher to EVER play, and he had countless strikeouts, great career stats, and has multiple World Series rings. Both of these men helped improve the game, and set the stage for future players, however they are all kept out of the HOF.

The game of baseball is very hard, and requires a lot of hard work, it is in many peoples opinions the hardest sport to play. Even pro baseball players only hit the ball on average of 2 times per every 10 at bats, and that’s if you’re lucky. The best players now a days are hitting an average of 30 homeruns. This is due to a great selection of great pitchers, stricter rules, and also less time to hit the ball due to increased speeds. The game of baseball is always changing, and is without a doubt one of the hardest sports to master. Because of this, people are always finding ways to improve their game, from new training techniques, to finding steroids, to doctoring the ball, it’s just become a part of the game.

The hardness of the sport, and the ever changing game of baseball has made the sport very hard to adapt too. This is why I support the idea of former steroid users getting allowed into the HOF. People who have broken records and are known for changing the game of baseball such as Barry Bonds, Mark McGuire, and Roger Clemens. They influenced the game in a time here attendance was low, and baseball was very unpopular. They helped people enjoy the game of baseball by dazzling them with a lot of homeruns, no hitters, and consecutive all-star games. They all have taken steroids, but this little problem cannot compare to their unbelievable accomplishments. The things they have done for the game of baseball in my opinion outshine the rest of the things they have done.

In all, I truly believe in contrast to others that people who have tested positive for steroids should be allowed in the Pro Baseball Hall of Fame. This is because they helped the game of baseball, and helped develop the game into a more popular sport. Many people have not accepted these people because they think they are cheating, but I believe they were justified in doing this, because they were just trying to help develop their games even further. After all, the game of baseball is always changing, and why get mad at guys for juts trying to get better and innovate the game.

History of the Bow

Did you know that Archery is considered to be one of the oldest sports in the world? It is believed that the early Neanderthal’s use a bow and arrow but the latest official record was from 5,000 years ago in ancient Egypt. Archery was not only used for hunting but in 1900 it debut in the summer Olympics in Paris France. The sport was discontinued 1924 but came back in Munich, Germany for the 1972 Olympics and has stayed ever since. The sport continues today as both a method of hunting and a competition sport.

One of the oldest bows found in known as the Holmegaard bow. This bow was discovered during WWII in the peat bogs of Denmark. It is dated to around 7000 years BC, in the Mesolithic period based on the layers of peat it was found in. This bow was found in four different pieces and measured to be 64 inches long. It considered to be a self-bow which is a bow made of a single piece of wood and might have a built up handle. Historians believe it came from the Maglemose people who were found on the island of Sjælland in Denmark. The Maglemose were very sophisticated hunters, they used domestic dogs and had decorated dug-out canoes. Although this bow is the oldest bow to be found It is now the oldest on the have existed. No one knows exactly when the bow and arrow were created but some scientists believe that they could have been used in the Paleolithic era around 70,000 years ago.

As the sport increased in popularity it was introduce to Asia where it became a big part of its culture. A new fighting style was created from the introduction and was originally known as kyujutsu which means “The art of the bow”. Today the Japanese call it kyudo or “Way of the bow”, Modern Kyudo is practiced primarily as a method of physical, moral, and spiritual development. It was at this time that the bow and arrow began to be use as a weapon of war. Attila the Hun was known to use a bow in combat and he conquered much of Europe and Asia in the 3rd century. The ancient Egyptians used arrows as weapons in battle. Arrows were made by attaching arrowheads made of either bronze or flint to reeds.

Starting in the late 19th century the bow and arrow became more modern. A rotating cam system and a machined riser were added. This is known as a compound bow and is the most commonly use bow today. The riser is the main part of the bow that has the grip and the rest. The cams are at the end of the limbs, these allow the bow to have a let-off and a smoother draw cycle. Let-off makes it easier for the shooter to stay steady because he is not holding all of that potential energy. A smoother draw cycle makes it more comfortable to shoot and a smoother release making everything more accurate. Because of the new riser, accessories can be attached to the bow such as a sight for more accurate aiming, a stabilizer (which is a weighted rod that is screwed into the riser for better stabilization), and a rest for a consistent place for the arrow to sit. Since the invention of the compound bow, they have been divided into two categories, hunting compound bows and target bows. A hunting bow will be smaller, typically between 28 and 34 inches long so it is easier to move through the woods. They will also have a more natural color obviously for blending in. Target archers will typically have a larger bow because they are bore stable, also their stabilizers and very long. The jump from the “stick bows” to a more complicated compound bow is the biggest advancement in archery history.Image result for pro defiant

The sport of archery has evolved immensely as we can see. The ancient bows were made of wood and consisted of a grip and a single string. As the centuries passed the bow was used for different things but the most common was for war. Archery became a part of Asian culture and formed a new fighting style. In the late 19th century a huge jump occurred when the compound bow was invented. This bow was very accurate compared to the long-bows and the recurves. Archery is one of the oldest sports known to man and still continues today.

The future of Adidas, the Yeezy Boost

From being a strictly soccer related company developed by 2 German brothers, to releasing iconic shoe silhouettes such as the Adidas Superstar, and the iconic Stan Smith, Adidas has always been a great brand. However it wasn’t until 2013-2014 until the brand shocked the World and generated the best revenue ever by signing Kanye West from Nike and releasing their best shoes ever. The Yeezy 750, Yeezy 350, and Yeezy 350 Version 2. The most coveted sneakers in every sneaker heads collection, with resell value (Value being resold after buying from a retail store, Yeezys gain at least 400$ after buying for retail, shoes gain value if they are deadstock, or an old release). People are lucky to get any real Yeezy’s as they are often counterfeited and remade. In all, the world has been shocked by the ongoing releases of Yeezy’s, and the sneaker market has gained over 1 billion dollars because of it, becoming a crucial part of many people’s lives.

The first Yeezy that Kanye released after his signing with Adidas was the Yeezy 750 Boost. The Yeezy 750 boost is a high top shoe with boost cushioning, and in a variety of colors. The first colorway that released was a grey top with white bottom, followed with 3 other releases. The least popular Yeezy to wear, but often the most highly priced, the main reason people get them is just to collect. With resell value sometimes as high as $3000, Yeezy 750’s are the most expensive Yeezys because they were the first to come out. Almost impossible to buy nowadays due to their rarity and crazy price point. In all, the Yeezy 750 was one of the most iconic shoes ever because it was one of the first shoes with boosttechnology, and Kanye’s first shoe with Adidas.  Yeezy 750 Gray and White

The next Yeezy that came out was the equally popular and expensive Yeezy 350. This Yeezy gained more attention because it was an even more popular silhouette due to the fact that it was a low top, and came in more desirable colors. The first to release was the Yeezy 350 Pirate Black, and the Yeezy 350 Turtle Dove. They both sold out in seconds and the only people who got them from a retail store were the people who won the raffles. The people who were lucky enough to still get a pair were often either scammed by fake sellers or forced to pay an incredibly high resell price of up to 200$. The other shoes that followed included a pair called, Oxford Tans, and Moonrocks. These are the most popular Yeezys that have ever came out and revolutionized the market by using mesh upper with and Adidas Boost bottom. These two combined to make a comfortable and stylish shoe that is worn by millions, and stashed by many as well. They were way more popular than the Yeezy 750, and are viewed as the best shoe of the last 10 years.

Yeezy 350 pirate black

The last iconic Yeezy that came out was the Yeezy version 2. This is the shoe that released last year, and hit the shelves in over 5 colorways. With a very sleek design, it is a very nice looking shoe and is closely looked at like the Yeezy 350. It has a great texture and the boost on the bottom helps it be even more comfortable. The main differences between all the colorways of the Yeezy are the lines on the side. With different colors you can collect them all and wear them with any outfit. The resell value of the Yeezy 350 v2 is not as high, but the shoe is not very old, so you can expect the value to go way up in a few years. The most popular color way that has come out is the Yeezy 350 V2 Zebra edition. In conclusion, the Yeezy 350 V2 while being less expensive is very good sneaker, with many great designs to appeal to a variety of audiences.

Yeezy 350 V2 Zebra

The Yeezy by Kanye and Adidas is arguably the best shoe by Adidas to come out ever. It features a variety of designs and Versions that have something everyone will like. And while it may not be affordable to the average joe, the sneaker head will gladly spend the money to get these coveted silhouettes. From the Yeezy 750, to the Yeezy 350, and all the way to the Yeezy 750 V2, Adidas has gained tremendous popularity and sales by coming out with these quality shoes. Makinbg both bthe sneaker head happy, as well as the brand as the shoes have been a success since day 1. Disney’s Biggest Secret

Chances are you have no idea what club 33 is. You are not alone. Club 33 is a hidden club inside Disneyland on the original side. This club is hidden in plain sight as it is in the middle of New Orleans Square. There is a door with the number 33 next to it. Although this club is unheard of by most the wait list to get in is not a short one. The waiting list is years long and that isn’t accounting for the costly payments you will be paying to maintain a membership.

The 1964 World’s Fair proved to be such an opportunity and Walt decided to not only give investors an incentive to hop on board with Disney but to reward his imagineers. The name club 33 has many explanations, but if you ask a cast member at Disney they will tell you it comes from the address on Royal Street. While Walt Disney was at the world fair, he visited many VIP clubs and lounges for sponsors and valued customers. He loved and enjoyed the idea of a VIP lounge so much that he brought it to Disney land. There are conspiracies that there are hidden lounges spread out through Disney World in Florida, but these conspiracies have not been proven.

Although access to a membership at Club 33 can be extensive and expensive it is worth the cost. Not only do they grant you access to the club but you can request to ride the train, mark twain, and get access to the club at the other park. This exclusive club on the other side of the park is known as club 1901. It is a lounge area where members can order snacks and beverages. It is a cozy, California style hang out area. It is names 1901 after the year Walt Disney was born. These benefits are just the ones we know about. Who knows what else could be hidden away.

I did some research of my own and found something nobody has ever been able to prove. After looking at the Disney website I found that if you look up club 33 one of the results is a club 33 magic band. When you open this link it leads to a step by step process on how to get a club 33 pass. This proves that there must be more than the clubs at Disney Land. First it talks about the process of how you get your special magic band verified to enter club. Only the Disney World in Orlando uses magic bands. This means that there must be a club 33 of sorts located in Disney World.

In conclusion Disney’s club 33 has remained to be Disney’s best kept secret in the park. For all we know there is still more to be discovered about club 33. Although the benefits of the club membership can be very tempting, remember a membership has been said to be up to $10,000 a year. Whether it is worth it or not is up to you although I do not find it worth it unless you have money to throw around, or you are so passionate about the park. The mystery of the locations of the club have yet to be discovered and hopefully will soon be leaked or confirmed one way or another. Until all these facts have been confirmed all club 33 Disney World is, is a myth.

Mrs. Kostelecky

Mrs. Kostelecky is the Registrar/Counseling Secretary here at the 8&9 school and her job includes registering all of the new students that come to Fruita and helping students change the schedules. She grew up on the western cost in San Diego and also in the Continent of Asia specifically in Yokohama Japan. Mrs. Kostelecky was a matador at Mount Miguel high school Spring Valley CA before she went to collage to get a cosmetology license. She was born in Alaska on August 7th in a certain year that is “Confidential”.

As I stated earlier Mrs. Kostelecky was raised in Japan. Her father was in the navy and he got stationed in Yokohama where she lived until seven years old. She and her family lived in the military housing. Because her father was in the Navy, the base was near the ocean. The culture there is very different but she say that it was a good experience. Japan is a very densely populated country but according to Mrs. Kostelecky everybody is super friendly. Even today she has remnants of Japan in her home and in her cooking.

Mrs. Kostelecky is married and has two kids. Before she worked at our school she was at FMS, Shelledy Elementary, and even worked at Visualeyes eye-care in downtown Fruita. The reason that she chose to work here is because she says, “the Fruita 8/9 office rocks”. She works in public education is so that she could have the same schedule as her kids and spend more time with them. You may remember that she has a cosmetology license but she would rather spend time with her kids.

In conclusion, you can see that Mrs. Kostelecky is a very interesting person and has had many cool life experiences. She helps or school function smoothly and if you have any scheduling problems you should give her a visit in the counseling office.

A teacher, a mother, a role model… Mrs. Willford

Ask anyone that’s every taken an AP class who their favorite teacher was, you are sure to hear them say Mrs. Willford. She is hardworking and cares so much about her students. Through all the things she has to teach us, Mrs. Willford always finds a way to make an activity fun. But there is much more to Mrs. Willford than just being an ordinary teacher. She is not only a mother, but did a great deal of things leading to where and how Mrs. Willford got to where she is today.

Growing up she had 2 sisters. She didn’t have a favorite because they were both the same to her; kind and helpful. She was born in North Dakota but quickly moved to the Grand Valley. She spent most of her life here and will continue to in the future. She lived in the Grand Valley for 7 years as a kid. Growing up she wanted to be a marine biologist. She was a good student and had it pretty normal growing up. Once she reached High School she finally knew that teaching was what she wanted to do. So that’s what she did.

Once she went off to college at CMU she was determined to be a teacher. She was not only a student but an athlete. She played soccer at CMU as well as studied to be a teacher. Once she graduated she went off to go work as a teacher. She has been at the Fruita 8/9 since it first opened (11 years). Mrs Willford has helped out the school ever since. When she first came to the school she was not an AP teacher. She started out as a Global Studies teacher then moved up in recent years.

Mrs. Willford not only did all these things but has a wonderful family. She has a son and a daughter and works hard to keep them happy while maintaining and handling her work for the school. Like I said if you ask anyone that has every had Mrs. Wilford will say she was the best AP teacher that they have ever had. Her hard work and determination has paid off and led to who she is today.

In conclusion Mrs. Willford is not only an amazing teacher but has an amazing backstory of hard work which leads to who she is today. Without the soccer, basketball, love for teaching and family she wouldn’t be the same. She is a truly interesting person with an even more interesting story on how she got to where she is today.

More than a Librarian… The story of Mrs.Cummings

The Fruita 8/9 School has a great librarian who always does her best to help out the school. Although students might not see her every day, Mrs. Cummings always tries to brighten student’s days when she sees them. From dealing with teenagers every day to organizing hundreds of books, the life of a librarian sure seems hard. This is why I decided to interview her this week. Interestingly enough, she had a very interesting backstory, and has a great sense of humor. I am sure glad she’s our librarian, and I hope you guys get to know a little more about her. And remember if you see Mrs. Cummings around the school, make sure to tell her thanks for being such a great teacher, and fun person to have at school every day.

Growing up, Mrs. Cummings lived in Casper Wyoming. It sure seemed like she had a great childhood from playing with her 6 siblings, to dedicating herself to academics as well as playing basketball. Mrs. Cummings has 2 brothers, 2 step brothers, 1 step sister, and 1 sister. She was very busy helping out her many brothers and sisters every day, as she was the 2nd oldest sibling. When she was not busy with family you could often find her with a nose in a book, or on the basketball court spending countless hour’s practicing. Growing up her mom always wanted her to wear pretty dresses to school, but Mrs. Cummings often chose to dress more of a Tom Boy, and embrace her athletic side. She was always a dedicated student, but didn’t know what she wanted to be when she grew up until she had an awesome English teacher for both 7th Grade and 12th Grade. From the 2nd time she had the teacher she knew she wanted to be a teacher when she grew up. However the road to getting there was harder than you would think.

Mrs. Cummings went to College for 6 years to become a teacher. She started schooling at The University of Northern Colorado in Greeley. Here she got her Bachelor’s degree, however wanting to become a teacher, she spent 2 more years at CU Denver getting her Masters. “The school was pretty hard, but after that everything came easy” she said. Shortly after getting her Degrees she has to take a teaching test, and then applied to be a teacher her at Fruita 8/9. Not many current students know but she started out as an English Teacher… She taught Literacy here for many years, but after our Librarian left she stepped in as a replacement and has done a great job. “I love working in the library and learning new things about the students, and engaging in important conversations with them” she also said. Although Mrs. Cummings wasn’t always sure what she wanted to be when she grew up, it sure seems like being a teacher is the perfect fit for her, and she’s done a great job at it.

Mrs. Cummings has been the librarian for a few years now, and she says it has been great. However I was interested what her daily life consisted of. Because nmost of the time, you can either find her behind her desk helping out students, helping with computers, or organizing books. But the life of a librarian is more than it seems. There is a lot of behind the scenes work. Every month or so she has to re decorate the library with different decorations and sometimes themes for holidays. She is always trying to get students engaged and does her best to get her students reading. From putting up fun posters to taking countless hours to organize books, Mrs. Cummings is always on the move and improving our library. She is also very passionate about; literature. Her favorite types of books to read are historical fiction, and other types of fiction however sometimes she likes to change it up and engage herself in an interesting non-fiction. Mrs. Cummings also keeps a list of her books she reads every year so if you want to see that ask her for more information. She loves students who are curious and love to learn so I highly encourage everyone to go out and discover more about our library. In all, Mrs. Cummings had a very interesting childhood that influenced her to become the great teacher she is today.

Librarians are almost always stereotyped as grumpy old and don’t have much to do, however Fruita 8/9’s unique and awesome librarian Mrs. Cummings tears apart these stereotypes and brings an engaging vibe to the library. From growing up with a lot of siblings, to going to college at UNC, and CU Denver Mrs. Cummings had a very unique childhood.  If you guys want to know more about her feel free to ask and check out the great library and fun decorations while you’re at it. Hope everyone has a good day.
