Why We Start School Too Early:

At our school, classes begin at 7:20 and don’t end until 2:50. But a recent study shows that we need to start school at a later time. One study in North Carolina shows that when schools start later in the morning, test scores improve greatly for students in the age range of 12-16 as that is a fundamental time for literary improvement. Students today are busier than ever before with after school activities and homework. On average in 12th grade, teachers require 3.5+ hours of homework and studying each night. This is not healthy for kids as they have activities, need family time, time to eat, time for sleep. And this prevents students from getting that. If  school started later, it would give more time for students to not only do their schoolwork, but also to get a proper amount of sleep.

Studies in 3 districts in Colorado tested this theory by starting school at 8:00, 9:00 and even 10:00 and they found that attitude improved as well as effort, success rates, and grades/test scores. The average GPA in the school increased by an entire point, showing a higher performance in math, science, and english classes. When students have more room for studying, sleep, and after school activities it leaves less room for bad grades.

It has been proven many, many times that when schools start later and end at the same time it does not hurt students’ grades. In fact, it does the opposite. So why do we keep school early? Because it might affect parents? If we did change school times, yes other things may change as well, but changing it would revolutionize our education system and even our daily lives would change for the better. School is an investment into the next generations future, so let’s give the next generation a better future. We need to change something if we want students to keep improving, so why not start with our school’s start time?
