Four Day School Week

Many schools have been thinking of going to a four day school week to help save money from the large budget cut of 11 million dollars. They have been taking and thinking of both pros and cons. Some of the pros that they have been discussing are that it would save about $84,500 to not run busses for one less day.  It would save about $177,000 in food.

Some of the cons that they were taking into perspective would be the problem that some parents don’t have someone, such as one of their parents, that they can easily have watch the child. Another problem is that the days would be longer and after a three day school weekend the kids could feel sluggish. Some of the other issues with a four day school week is that the teachers are worried about are that “special needs” students may have retention difficulties with an extra day off each week.

Although there are some worries about a four day school week there are more benefits than not. For example from data from schools that are doing the four day school week there rate of drop outs and office referrals has decreased. They also found that student achievement is generally not affected either positively or negatively. As far as attendance both student and teacher attendance improved. School days missed due to inclement weather can be made up on what would have been the fifth school day—instead of at the end of the school year. Overall a four day school week is a god solution to help with the budget cut.

  1. Very nicely written, i totally agree on the 4 day week because it would the save the school so much money like you said in the article. But there also was some defaults to this change like you said some kids don’t have parents that can watch their kids on those days. Nicely written good job.
