Ryan Lewis

Ryan Lewis is a person of many talents. He is a musician, music producer, music video director, photographer, graphic designer, and DJ. Ryan Lewis works very closely to Ben Haggerty, aka Macklemore.  He also produces for himself, and for other artists such as LP. Lewis has directed almost all of the music videos for Macklemore, including “Same Love”, “Thrift Shop” ,”Wings”, and recently, “Can’t Hold Us”. Ryan Lewis has been working with Macklemore since 2006, when they released their first album together, “The VS EP”. The two have been working as business partners and friends ever since.

Ryan Lewis was born March 25, 1988. He went to Ferris High School in Spokane, Washington, and graduated from Roosevelt High School in Seattle Washington. Ryan Lewis attended the University of Washington, where he majored in Comparative History of Ideas. Even from an early age, Ryan Lewis has loved music. He played guitar from an early age and then later on in his life started to make his way into audio production. Lewis also grew a passion for his photography around the age of 15. During the summer of 2006, a now professional photographer, Ryan Lewis began to take pictures of an up-and-coming rapper, Macklemore. The duo became very good friends, and 2 summers later decided to do a full collaborative project “The VS EP”.

Ryan Lewis’s music career has been to say the least, a successful one. He released “The VS EP” on November 27, 2009. After their first album together had been on iTunes for almost a year, Lewis and Macklemore decided to release a redux, or a complete remix of all songs, on a new album, “The VS EP Redux”.  On August 28, 2012, the two artists released “The Heist”. The album has been a huge success selling 78,000 copies. The album debuted at #2 on Billboard Charts and #1 on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and Top Rap Albums. The album all together has received over 1 million plays on Sound Cloud and 350 million views on YouTube.

Ryan Lewis has had many successes in his very early career. And I feel his success will continue until his retirement. Macklemore and Ryan Lewis are a “trailblazing” rap group. They have changed the way music is written, and how open they are to their fans, is one of my favorite things about them.
