Why Cheerleading is a Sport

A cheerleader at my school says that Cheerleading is a sport because the cheerleaders work very hard and they throw other people up in the air. Football is not necessarily easier or harder than cheerleading because they do the same amount of work but cheerleading is a little harder sometimes because they have to throw people up in the air and the practices are very tense. The girl that said this is a very hardworking cheerleader and she works very hard at cheerleading and her name is Taelor.

Says that Cheerleading is a sport because they work very hard at what they do. Just because they stand on the side lines cheering for football doesn’t mean that they aren’t as important and that it is not a sport. Kelle also says that cheerleading is harder than football because they are throwing people up in the air and the work outs are crazy hard and they are very challenging and football players just throw a ball and chase after it. The girl who said this is a very competitive cheerleader and her name is Kelle.

Some people think that cheerleading is not a sport because they don’t play with some sort of ball but then others think that it is a sport because they work just as hard as other people do in their sports. Everybody has their own opinion but cheerleading really is a sport because they work very hard at what they do and it takes a lot more strength to cheer than it does to play any other sport. It is very hard to throw people up in the air and also do flips up in the air. People think that cheerleaders just cheer because it is easy but it is really not that easy how about you try and be thrown up in the air and do a flip while you’re in the air.

A sport is a something that can be judged by your physical activity and cheerleading is a sport because they get judged by their physical activity all the time. Competitive cheerleading includes gymnastics, and cheerleaders must be able to tumble. They perform standing back flips, round flip flops, and full layout twists. Cheerleaders also perform lifts and tosses. This is where someone that is called a flier are thrown in the air, held by the people on the bottom who are the bases in different positions that require strength and cooperation with other teammates. Basketball and football have guidelines for competitive play, so does competitive cheerleading. The whole routine has to be completed in less than three minutes and 15 seconds and the cheerleaders are required to stay within a certain area. Competitive cheerleaders’ goal is to be the best and the most outstanding. Just like gymnastics, they are awarded points for difficulty, technique, creativity and sharpness. The more difficult a stunt is the sharper and more firm the motions are and the better the score is. Cheerleading is a team sport so without teamwork then first place is unreachable.

Even though cheerleading is not a sport that has a ball in it does not mean that it is not a sport. Cheerleaders don’t get hit with 200 pound guys like football players do but they pick up girl that are on the team and throw them up in the air and the people in the air are doing hardcore flips in the air. When they come back down from the air it is scary because they don’t know if someone is going to ketch them and it is hard for the catchers because they catch a girl that is coming down very fast.
