Furries

The furry fandom is seen through many people’s eyes as odd, crazy, and sexual. They are right about all that, but however, it’s not as bad as you think. Taking an inside look at things, the fandom isn’t that bad…At all.

Let’s start at the basics. A ‘furry’ is someone who is fascinated with anthropomorphic animals. Whether the fasciation comes from cartoon characters, such as Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, or Tom from Tom and Jerry, there is no difference in what you are from what brought you here in the first place. That fascination can be sexual, of just having an interest in the humanized characters. Furries may even create their own character, which is called a fursona. A fursona is a furry character based off of one’s personality, often resembling the person themselves. The name fursona comes from persona, but it’s an animal, so, the term fursona came to be. There are many cons each year you can attend called furcons. Some of the more popular ones include Anthrocon, Rocky Mountain Furcon, Furry Fiesta, and Biggest Little Furcon. There, furries of all ages gather and celebrate friendships, or make new ones. Artists and costume makers flock to the area as well to sell their hand made goods for a pretty penny or two. Most people think it’s odd to dress like an animal in public, but furries defy the odds. Now this is where we get misunderstood. Many people outside the fandom believe the furries only dress up for sex. They see the fandom as one big fetish. A very small portion of the fandom is like that…Not all of them. Many of the people inside the costumes dress up for a few reasons: One, to have fun. Two, to make people smile. And three, to give the world a little magic. The whole fandom overall is very giving and accepting, but there is a lot of hate and drama at times. The people within the fandom are always raising money for charities, and donating their time to help the community. They’re very interactive and they love to have fun. So please, stop seeing the furry fandom as one big fetish. Instead, look at it as a big fluffy family with lots to give. We want nothing more than to be accepted. Thank you. <3
