History of Basketball

Basketball is all around the world and one of the most popular sports around. Basketball first originated from the United States and was created by James Naismith in 1891. The game started to become very popular by 1892 because of how fast it spread all around the world. The game first started using peach baskets as a goal for the ball to score points to be able to win the game. They played 2 peach baskets tied to a pole on each end of the field and used a ball shaped like a soccer ball to play the game. Canada was the first people to play the game outside of the United States. This is because they were the only close country that was very involved into the United States newest inventions that had going on at that time.

The rules of the game were very simple when basketball first became a sport. They started out the game of basketball with 7 players because the field they would play on was almost 2 times the size of a normal basketball court today. The basketballs they used to play with used to be white but the rules changed to having to play with a yellow ball so it was more visible on the court. The basketball courts didn’t have a 3 point line when the game was first invented and played, a 3 point line was later added in 1979 to make the game go faster because that’s how you could earn more points throughout the game. Here's the history of basketball—from peach baskets in Springfield to global phenomenon

The final rules of regulation were set by 1910 that all boundaries of a basketball court needed to be straight, only 5 players could be on the court at a time, and the number of fouls and technical fouls throughout the game. They first started counting fouls when many people were getting hurt and upset about the rules. One other important rule and technique they taught of the game was defense. This played a big toll on the game and allowed many people to play and make the game faster paced and make it more challenging for the players on the “court” or field playing the game.

The history of women in sports in basketball started as only some women playing the sport when it first came out, but it was considered a “manly sport” and a lot of women didn’t play. Basketball for girls was first introduced to college in 1895 and was introduced to guys in 1893. This is because the game was widespread when it was first played and so many people around the world got introduced to it. Many girls started playing their own games and the boys would play their own game. Later in 1899 tournaments were introduced and people started playing other people from different places to see who was the best team in the area.

All in all, many people around the world enjoy the game of basketball and played a very big part of our history in the sport world. Basketball is still very much enjoyed by many people around the world like schools, the NBA, WNBA and just people who go out and play it for fun. I think basketball would really change people’s point of view if all the people who play or watch basketball if they knew the background of it and knew how it originated and change the sport world.
