Microsoft released their latest Windows 8 RT tablet, dubbed “Surface”, on October 26. Although it has received mixed criticism, you have to wonder; is surface the future of Windows?
Microsoft crafted a wonderful device; there’s been no doubt about it. It has a nice battery life, (comparable to that of an iPad, but longer.) uses a powerful ARM processer, has a responsive touchscreen, and has an all-around sleek, slim, futuristic feel- for only $499. There’s only one holdback to Microsoft’s fantastic device- the Windows 8 RT
The Windows 8 RT, although good for lightweight tablet functions, like angry birds or light web browsing, isn’t really all that good for any more computer-like tasks, such as word processing or spreadsheet editing. The Windows RT has to open a fake windows 7 environment to launch the RT Surface Microsoft office application set- which means you have to use a keyboard and mouse combo to use them. this would be fine if the surface came with the trackpad/keyboard cover, but it is sold seperately for some users for an additional $99. Beyond that, the Microsoft application store (comparable to the App Store from Apple) is very limited in it’s set of third-party apps.
