Ms. Brewington and Agriculture

From the beginning of the 2020 school year, Fruita 8/9 has been lucky to have Ms. Samantha Brewington as our agriculture teacher. Ms. Brewington was born in Grand Junction, Colorado in 1996. But within the next five years of her life, she had lived in multiple states including Oklahoma, California, and Alaska. By the time she had moved back to Grand Junction, she had developed a love for animals and the outdoors.

Even until this day she has kept her enthusiasm for nature. She loves living in Colorado for all of the places to hike and see along with its beautiful mountain ranges and wildlife. As a kid, she loved to go explore the variety of nature and animals surrounding her house in Grand Junction. Also while growing up, Ms. Brewington competed in 4H for her love of raising animals, but mainly raised pigs. 4H is a program for youth interested in learning the processes of raising, taking care of, and eventually selling farm animals. After learning how to properly breed, feed, and show pigs, Ms. Brewington competed in the 4H program for the pigs that she raised.

Ms. Brewington is also a wildcat! She graduated from Fruita Monument High School in the Spring of 2014 and then started college in the Fall at CSU in Fort Collins.  But Ms. Brewington didn’t always have the end goal set to be a high school teacher. “I started in animal science at CSU with the intent to go to vet school,” Ms. Brewington states. She liked the livestock animal based aspect of animal science during her first year of college. It was after that year that Ms. Brewington decided that she would rather teach agriculture and then went to agricultural education school to become a teacher.

Shortly after graduating from CSU, Ms. Brewington became a teacher at West Grand High School in Kremmling, Colorado. After one year there, she then became a teacher at the small school of De Beque for the 2019-2020 school year and then started teaching at Fruita 8/9 this school year. Ms. Brewington says that because of her really positive experience in her agriculture program, she wanted to become an agriculture teacher. She also likes working with kids and with animals so teaching an agriculture class was a fun way for her to “tie it all together”. When Ms. Brewington isn’t in the classroom, she likes to read, craft, hike, and play tennis in her little bit of free time.

Within the few years of her teaching experience, Ms. Brewington has gotten to make many personal relationships with her students outside of school by doing lots of competitions and activities with agriculture, which most teachers don’t ever get to do. Ms. Brewington has a very intriguing and interactive class, giving students breaks from the struggles of taking notes all period in boring classes. From just this interview, I have been convinced without her even trying, to take agriculture with Ms. Brewington next year at Fruita Monument High School.
