Should Students Have Less Homework?

This generation of high school students has the largest homework workload in recorded history. You will always hear students complain about having homework, but is it really too much for students to handle? Especially for those student athletes or those students who volunteer. Students pull piles of papers that stack on top of their desk and simply can’t handle the workload without affecting sleep, causing un-healthy amounts of stress, and taking them away from time they could be spending with family, or doing activities they enjoy.

Homework has been a sort of tradition held by all students and teachers forever. Homework, in theory, is supposed to teach students how to be responsible with their school work, and that they need to take school a bit more seriously. But in reality, how affective is this system? What is the reason that we continue to use this in our school system? Does it really work? If you ask students, and teachers, you’re likely to hear to very different opinions.

I feel that students are receiving too much homework. It takes time away from sleep, activities, and time I could be spending with my family or doing a sport. It also causes stress for many students, knowing that the moment they get home all they will see are pages of a textbook. The “system” of homework is not really working. There are always students who don’t understand it, or just are too busy to deal with sometimes up to 3 hours or more of homework. It’s turning good students into bad students, and its simply not working. I think there has to be a change.
