How Much a Lack of Sleep Can Affect Students

Many students in America are affected negatively because they receive little sleep. In fact 48% percent of the students don’t get the needed sleep they need to get the maximum performance. “Lack of sleep should no longer be considered a traditional adolescent rite of passage because it can have serious consequences” says Dr. Danner of American Academy of Sleep Medicine. Student’s grades usually are significantly better when a student gets more sleep. Not getting enough sleep can affect many things including grades, behavior, and even health.

In one of the many studies of 1,000 students, 90% reported feeling dazed from lack of sleep. There is also very much evidence that this lack of sleep affect grades. In fact “most of the higher-GPA students awakened later on school days, awoke earlier on weekends, had fewer night-time awakenings and other signs of good sleep habits.” This shows how much good sleep can affect your GPA. Also there is many other studies that show just how much grades can be affected by a lack of sleep.

A lack of sleep can also do other things. One huge thing that can occur overtime if you don’t get the needed sleep is it can stunt your growth. This is because most of a person’s growth hormones are produced during sleep and if a person doesn’t get that sleep they won’t grow nearly as much as they could. Not only can sleep deprivation stunt your growth but it can also lead to obesity and diabetes. Many experts are looking in to whether this has to do with hormonal changes. Also the lack of sleep can even make you age faster and create issues in the future. This shows how much sleep affects American students.Sleeping Student
